The African Travelling Teacher Launches Global Village Photography Project at Nyarutembe Community School
On Saturday 23rd August 2025, The African Travelling Teacher, Francis Bizoza Bigirimana, officially launched the Global Village Photography Project at Nyarutembe Community Secondary School. This new initiative, facilitated by The African Travelling Teacher, builds on the strong partnership between Nyarutembe and the Western Academy of Beijing (WAB).
The project invites learners to capture their world through photography under the theme “This is my place. This is what I see. This is how I live.” Using tablets provided during the earlier Cultural Canvas Project, students were trained by The African Travelling Teacher to take meaningful photographs and accompany them with captions and reflections. These images will be shared with their peers in Beijing, who will in turn create woodcut prints inspired by the Ugandan perspectives.
Learners expressed their excitement and gratitude for this new phase of collaboration. “After the Cultural Canvas, we learnt a lot,” said Maria Tereza, a student participant. “We at Nyarutembe are very happy and grateful. Now we are excited about this Global Village project and we shall fully participate in it.” She added a heartfelt message to their partners in China: “We are grateful to our fellow students in Beijing for considering us as learning partners. We look forward to deeper collaboration.”
Special gratitude goes to Daniel Avila (Visual Arts Teacher, WAB), Angelia Crouch (Global Citizenship Coordinator at WAB), and Innocent Dushimimana (Head Teacher, Nyarutembe Community School) for their tireless coordination and commitment to keeping the collaboration alive and impactful on both fronts.
Later, students in Beijing will also share photographs from their own surroundings, which Nyarutembe learners will respond to artistically. Together, their work will form a collective exhibition showcasing a collaborative portrait of our shared global village.
This launch marks yet another milestone in the mission of The African Travelling Teacher to bridge cultures, empower learners, and inspire global citizenship through art, technology, and storytelling.
