Location: Gremmy Junior School, Kabuga – Uganda
Date: July 11, 2025
Theme: Bridging Communities Through Culture, Learning, and Technology
The African Travelling Teacher has officially launched its second Global Schools Collaboration, connecting Gremmy Junior School (Uganda) and Melanin Day School Academy (USA) in a vibrant educational partnership rooted in shared culture, creativity, and offline technology.
A Journey of Connection and Discovery
The kickoff event brought together learners, teachers, parents, and facilitators in a spirited exchange that marked the beginning of a powerful cross-continental relationship. The initiative aims to cultivate global citizenship, deepen cultural understanding, and support learner-centered education using project-based approaches and digital tools that work even in low-resource settings.
Key Highlights from the Launch
- Cultural & Tech-Powered Learning: Learners explored art, craft, and STEAM activities, while teachers participated in hands-on training on how to use the Kolibri platform for offline digital learning.
- Parental Engagement: Parents experienced a moving moment as they watched pre-recorded videos of their children performing traditional dances and weaving—reminders of the beauty and value of local culture.
- Technology Deployment: A laptop server was delivered to Gremmy Junior School, setting the foundation for an offline learning network. Once tablets and a router are secured, learners will seamlessly access shared digital content curated in collaboration with MDSA.
- Excitement Across the Board: Teachers, parents, and learners left the event with renewed energy and curiosity, eager to see how the collaboration evolves.
Addressing Challenges, Embracing Growth
Despite constraints like time pressure, room congestion, and the need for translation, the kickoff revealed immense potential. A set of clear recommendations—such as creating a parent-led committee, hosting targeted follow-up sessions, and developing a structured parent engagement calendar—will help strengthen the partnership and ensure its sustainability.
The Road Ahead
With MDSA actively fundraising for tablets and routers, and Gremmy Junior School encouraged to deepen parent-school collaboration, the partnership is well on its way to becoming a model for how schools across continents can collaborate meaningfully—even without internet access.
This is more than a school collaboration. It is a celebration of African identity, a bridge across oceans, and a powerful step toward making quality education relevant, inclusive, and inspiring for every learner.
The African Travelling Teacher will continue to document and guide this journey—ensuring no learner is left behind, and every teacher and parent becomes a champion of change.
